
Dr. Richard Caruso was born and raised in Philadelphia and resided there until 1993 when he moved to Lewes, DE. He attended Friends Select High School, graduating with honors then attended Villanova University where he graduated CUM LAUDE with a B.S. in Science in 1979. He subsequently obtained his Juris Doctor degree at Villanova School of Law graduating in 1982. While attending law school, he was a law clerk for his brother, Joseph G. Caruso, Esq., and worked at the Police Administrators building performing intakes on prisoners. After practicing law with his brother for several years, he was accepted at Jefferson Medical College where he received his Medical Doctorate in 1988. Thereafter, he completed a three-year residency in Internal Medicine and a two-year fellowship in gastroenterology and liver disease at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia. He moved to Lewes where he has practiced Gastroenterology since 1993.
He has served in numerous positions at his local hospital (Beebe Medical Center) including as a member of the Medical Executive Committee, Pharmacy Committee and as Department Chief of GI for several years. He was recognized as Doctor of the Year by the medical staff in 1999 and as one of Delaware’s Top Docs in 2000. He has also served as Medical Director of several nursing homes and is currently Medical Director of Seaside Endoscopy Pavilion.
Regarding his community involvement, he served on the Vestry at St Peter’s Church in Lewes and has coached soccer and baseball to youth ages 8 to 16. He achieved a black belt in Tang Soo Do after several years of training at age 50. He enjoys golf, tennis and bike riding. He became a founding board member and owner of Community Bank Delaware in 2006 and served on the board until 2019.
He is married to his wife Teresa for over twenty years and has three fantastic children.
